The 2½-acre United Chrome Products, Inc. site is a former chrome-plating facility located in an industrial complex adjacent to the Corvallis Municipal Airport, 3½ miles south of the city of Corvallis. The company conducted electroplating operations from 1956 to 1985. An on-site dry well was used to dispose of floor drippings, washings, and product rinsate collected in a sump within the building. The liquids reportedly were neutralized with sodium hydroxide and/or soda ash prior to disposal. The company conducted electroplating operations from 1956 to 1985. Plating wastes were discharged into a dry well. The indoor plating tanks leaked plating solution directly to subsurface soils. Groundwater, surface water, sediments and on-site soils were contaminated with chromium. Two city wells are located approximately 3,000 feet northeast of the site; however, the City is not using these wells. Contamination previously extended over 2 miles off-site in surface water, and over 1½ miles off-site in sediments. Approximately 42,000 people live within 3 miles of the site. The closest residence is approximately 900 feet northeast of the facility. Corvallis obtains some of its water from the Willamette River, which formerly received drainage from ditches and surface water from the site until cleanup measures were implemented. Site Responsibility: This site is being addressed through federal and responsible parties' actions.
