The CryoChem, Inc. site consists of 19 acres located in Earl Township, Berks County. The facility, which began operation in 1962, fabricated metals and used solvents to clean finished metal parts, disposing of those solvents in shop drains. The shop drain system discharged into nearby surface waters that lead to Manatawny Creek. More than 1,100 people live within a three-mile radius and partially depend on groundwater as a drinking water supply. Environmental samples collected between 1981 and 1985 found organic chemicals in an on-site production well and in nearby residential wells. Volatile organic compounds from solvent disposal are the chemicals of concern.
