refuse hideaway landfill

SW1/4 OF NW1/4 SEC8 T7N R8E

The 23-acre Refuse Hideaway Landfill site, located in rural Dane County, Wisconsin, was licensed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) in 1974. The landfill accepted municipal, commercial, and industrial wastes until 1988, when it was closed by order of a state court. The owner of the landfill, under oversight of WDNR, complied with the closing order by installing a clay and soil cap and seeding the cover. Public and private wells, located within four miles of the site, provide water supplies to an estimated 14,600 people in the area. The nearest of these wells is privately owned and located within one-half mile of the site. Site Responsibility This site is being addressed through federal and state actions.
