plating, inc.

8801 WEST SIXTH STREET

The Plating Inc. site is a former chromium and zinc plating facility located in the Great Bend airport industrial complex, approximately 1.5 miles southwest of Great Bend and about two miles north of the Arkansas River. The site building was constructed and chromium plating began in 1968. Zinc plating was added to the processes in 1975. In 1988, KDHE found soil contamination which resulted from the blowers in the facility ventilation system. In 1989, KDHE ordered the facility to address state and federal violations for the handling and storage of hazardous wastes and remove contaminated soil. Soil was excavated by the facility in 1990, under KDHE oversight, and a fume scrubber was installed in the ventilation system to prevent recontamination of the soil. In 1991, ground water sampling identified chromium contamination. In 2005 the Plating Inc. facility ceased operations. In the 2000 census, the town of Great Bend had a population of 15,345.
