garfield ground water contamination

WILLARD STREET AND PIERRE AVENUE

The Garfield Groundwater Contamination site is located in a mixed commercial/residential area in southwest Garfield, Bergen County, New Jersey. The site consists of a chromium groundwater plume originating from the E.C. Electroplating, Inc. property extending west, one half mile downgradient, to the Passaic River. Electroplating operations were conducted at the E.C. Electroplating, Inc. property from the 1930s until 2009. In December 1983, a partially-buried vertical storage tank at E.C. Electroplating, Inc. failed, releasing an estimated 3,640 gallons of chromic acid directly into the shallow aquifer and deeper bedrock aquifer. Chromic acid that entered the groundwater has resurfaced in downgradient commercial and residential basements.
